▲ ▼ | vss 103-110: a difficult passage
-auctor: apparently some god or half-god: the initiator of eating meat; Ovid hemself isn't even sure, who started eating meat. We almost see Ovid here looking into books, which he had in his library, and not being able to find a passage inwhich clearly is stated, who initiated the eating of meat: (aliquis) auctor, quisquis ille fuit, as Ovid himself says here.
-victibus (..) leonum: I donot understand the translation here given by Nodic.com: leonum = Priest? Vs 104 says, that the initiator was jalous of the food of the lions and therefore (105) started to eat meat also; there is another texttradition which reads 'deorum' instead of 'leonum'.
-corporeas dapes: meat;
-demergere dapes in alvum: I wonder, if this is a common latin phase or a combination created by Ovid; it seems to mean something like: to devour meat
-106-07: easy and transparent latin, this is.
-nostrum petentia letum = (things) that seek our death; what these things are, follow in the next verse: corpora
-(109:) corpora : scilicet, feras an animalia, quae pro hominibus periculosa sint ut leones.
-vs 109: read : fatemur - pietate salva - / corpora (= feras) (nobis) ad necem missa esse; I construe 'fatemur' here with aci.
-(110:) quam = ut
-(110): read: ferae (= corpora), quae pericolosae sint, ad necem dandae sunt, sed non epulandae/edendae sunt/ sed nos has feras edere non licet.
-108: idque satis fuerat = this had been enough; scilicet, the eating of meat by the 'auctor'. If it would not have gone further, we would have been able to state, that we kill dangerous animals (but not eat them) and stating that without loosing our piety (salva pietate). I have to break my brains almost to understand this kind reasoning.
