Rather than acre, the correct construction is the ablative singular of AES, AERIS (neutral), a noun denoting copper, bronze, money in the singular whereas its plural usually denotes objects made of copper or bronze, such as statues, instruments and vessels. However, when used with ALIENUM as in AERE ALIENUM the meaning is debt. Thus "quos aere alieno laborare arbitrabatur, sollicitabat" can be loosely translated as "he attempted to incite those whom he thought were oppressed by debt".
