ancilia: the sacred shields are the figure-of-eight ancilia of the Salii, the priests of Mars. One fell from heaven during the reign of Numa, the second king of Rome, and was promptly made the model for the other eleven. (West Odes 3, p. 57; cf. Livy 5.54.7)
