"emptito, are," intensive of "emo"; this and the next verb express o.o. in historic sequence in which the pluperf. subj. replaces the fut. perf. indic., the "consultus" of the senate reading "qui emptitaverit vendideritve...."; <the Senate> issued a consultum that whoever shall have purchased or sold such service (calumnia/praevaricatio; cf. the note on "calumnia.")...." English uses the present tense to express the protasis of a minatory condition: "if anyone buys such a service (prevarication), he will be liable < to punishment>"; Latin uses the fut. perf.: "qui emptitaverit, tenebitur...."
