I don't know a source for the "plant with narcotic juice" definition. Carbasus comes from the Sanskrit for cotton, via Greek. Pliny (19.2) uses the word for certain very fine Spanish linen. But it seems more likely the Spanish weavers called their cloth carbasum because it was in fact, cotton.
