The subject of the main clause ("praecipui...exuuntur")is "all the chieftains of the Iceni": they were deprived of their ancestral property; the subject of "accepissent" in the subordinate clause is the Romans in Britain; cf the next note. Furneaux describes the "change of subject" as "harsh. This is the only way the sentence makes sense: the Romans treated the "entire region as if it were a gift to them."
